What I Want Them To Know…

dream dresser

dream dresser 2

about six months ago, i did a dresser a little something like this one. when i found this piece…it was perfect since the drawers were a “blank slate”. so here’s what i want them to know…
i think most of you know by now that i have five children – four girls and a handsome little man. my youngest is four and my oldest is sixteen. i realize this may sound insane, but i already think about the fact that my sixteen year old only has about two years left at home…where does the time go?? and so i already spend time wondering if i have taught her all that i should have to prepare her to live on her own. how in the world does this relate to furniture? well…i decided that my teenagers spend an obscene amount of time “getting ready”…changing clothes, trying things on, etc – so they spend a lot of time with their dressers! (hee hee) (or well…the floor space right in front of their dressers – but …same thing…)so i decided to do a dresser that would list a few of the qualities that i want my children to have developed in our home-things that are important to their dad and i – things that i want them to see and be reminded of every day – qualities that i think will make them succcessful and happy as they start their own homes someday.
i want them to believe – believe in themselves, believe that they can do anything they set their minds to, believe that they are special and talented.
i want them to create – there is joy in creating, i want them to find that joy no matter what they create – whether it’s an incredible dresser or a super batch of cookies, or a beautiful garden.
i want them to try – to have faith that when they try hard, they can literally make miracles happen – when they try to be their very best – THAT’s when they’ll truly be happy.
i want them to play – to remember that we’re here to feel joy! to have fun! to smile! i want them to always be carefree and young at heart enough to remember to play!
i want them to laugh! i chose to marry their dad cause he makes me laugh. laughing can change your whole mood – it can affect your health in a positive way – it can help you live longer – i want them to laugh as often as possible!!
i want them to dream - i want them to set goals and work to achieve them – i want them to dream about what would make them happy and work to make that dream come true.
so…now how many of you need one of these dressers for your daughter to see every day???
(and how many of you are going to e-mail me to tell me that a furniture website should never be this sappy?)

i have wanted to do this pretty much since i started Rethunk Junk. and it was every bit as enjoyable as i thought it would be! it took a while to gather all the buttons… and even longer to find a dresser that i thought worked for this project… and then even LONGER to sort thru all the buttons and just find the white/cream/pearl ones. i saw a version of this in an extremely classy boutique here in atlanta for over $700.00 so it was fun to try and recreate it! i think this would be beautiful in a bedroom, in a bathroom, or really lovely in any room decorated all in whites…even a formal living room. come see it in person – it’s a beautiful piece!

this is one good looking set of drawers, huh? long dressers are hard to find! and this one is definately long – nine drawers in all – WHITE piece accented with black – not cream like i usually do – clean crisp white! would be perfect as a buffet piece since it’s long – MEASUREMENTS anyone?? 60 across 17 3/4 deep 30 tall and just let me say that i have tried really hard lately to put dimensions on my pieces and no one has thanked me. in fact…now i don’t get all the fun e-mails asking for dimensions so i’m feeling a little lonely and unappreciated. and based on how often he griped that i was not including them… i thought it would bring much more joy to my husband’s life that it seemed to…but surprise, surprise…he has found other things to suggest now *sigh*

cool buffet 3

this was sooooo much fun – cause it turned out sooooo cool. (er…well…at least I think so!) i dragged my husband along during one of my recent “junk hunts”. i had mapped out about 12 places i wanted to check – which he estimated would take about three days (he was a bit cranky). well…he must have said a heck of a prayer…cause we found this at the second stop on the trip….which, as i’m sure you can imagine, completely filled the van! i was so thrilled that i completely ignored his glee at being able to go home so soon. i swear i’m gonna start taking before and after photos! i get so excited to start a piece that i have all the yucky hardware off, sanding done and am starting to prime before i ever remember! needless to say, this looked a wee bit different before rethunking took place! now it’s a gorgeous nine drawer dresser? buffet? tv stand? (you decide). cream and distressed, with way cool carving on six of the drawers. and i love the hardware. kinda echos the carving on the drawers. this piece is really well made – all the drawers open fabulously smoothly and it’s incredibly clean.

this one is way cute and very different from lots of what i see. i love the little drawer on top. cream color and distressed, it has four large drawers – the two in the middle are deep and awesome, and the one wee drawer on top. beautiful carving on top, on the two middle drawers and on the bottom. wooden wheels. very cool dresser!!

TEENAGERS!!

So this posting is actually for the low dresser in the pictures above. I’ll get to the info on that in a sec. First – i have to share that i have a teenager (two in fact) who have been watching me work in the garage for the last couple of months and who have been pretty patient when i ask them to help me drag furniture around my house to take pictures. So… when my 15 year old helped with this piece she thought it would be hilarious to be “in” the pictures. You can see in the last two photos her foot and then the top of her head. The ‘hilarious’ part for me was listening to her giggle as she “posed” for the pictures. Pretty awesome to me that something like that can make a 15 year old happy!!!!! I’m a lucky mama!
Now…the dresser…four drawers, amazingly heavy – drawers are on metal tracks and slide super – painted a creamy color – awesome black hardware – could be used lots of places. In fact before i had the hardware i asked my spouse to help me drag it upstairs so you can see that it would make a cool piece at the end of the bed – then we drug it back downstairs to use as a sofa table. (since it weighs 700 pounds this affected the price negatively for you all! ha!)

You Can Personalize This!

This is a five drawer dresser – kakhi color with black hardware and little bun feet. You can purchase it like it is (which is pretty super!) :) for 65…OR for an extra 20 bucks (that would be a total of 85 for those of you who are “mathly” challenged) i can label the drawers for you. there is a picture here of two drawers with an example (not permanently attached incase someone wants it plain). Drawers could say shirts, pants, pj’s – whatever you’d like! This would be perfect for a little boy’s room – i realize lots of what i do is more geared towards girls (maybe cause i have four??) but this would be great for a little man! And i am very interested in how this one goes cause i LOVE the words, but i have a spouse and child (won’t use Tom or Lindsey’s names here) that tell me that it won’t sell with the words. Hmmmmm…..

Antique Curved Dresser

Okay – so i almost want to keep this one! It’s an antique curved dresser. Painted a creamy color (even tho it may look white) Three drawers – low height – that’s why i have staged it as a nightstand in my ever so lovely bedroom! the dimensions are: 23″ deep, 43.5″ long and 25″ tall. cool hardware and little keyholes. would make a great nightstand between two little girls beds. my husband and i may even switch to twin beds on either side of it so we could enjoy it. (wonder if that would help with the snoring??) This piece sold.
