this weekend’s best find!

you know…these “neighborhood garage sales” are just frightening! i should raise my prices based soley on the physical and mental risks i take as i try and find decent pieces at decent prices!
#1 – why are ALL driving rules apparently suspended when one is garage sale-ing? people park on the wrong side of the road…park going the wrong direction…slow down and shop FROM THEIR CARS…park diagonally, thus blocking all thru traffic…whiz by at 700 miles an hour while i am opening my van door effectively shaving 25 years off of my lifespan…it can be downright scary!!!
#2 – why does NO ONE BUT ME pay attention to the “no early birds please” request?????? i can get somewhere at 7:59 when a sale starts at 8 and there are sold signs on all the good things. i SWEAR the people must have drug out their good furniture, never intending to sell it -just to suck people in!!!!
#3 – since when did people start charging 200 bucks for a dresser at a GARAGE SALE???? and one that needs work!!!! even if it IS a solid wood piece, or a super brand name. it’s a GARAGE SALE….and daggum it – we can both see that one of the legs has to be reattached! be real!!
#4 – what causes the frenzied atmosphere….like sharks circling their lunch…when more than about 4 women end up at the same yard sale? (now MY freakish attitude does not count, as i am desperately trying to send my kids to college and assist a wee bit with retirement funds) but those OTHER women???? seriously! they watch my eyeballs and if i pause for a moment on any one item, 2 of the 3 women will rush over and start circling it like they own it!
#5 – shouldn’t there be some kind of regulations about how you can advertise your yard sale?????? DO NOT put the sign out on FRIDAY if your sale isn’t till SATURDAY!!! i have slammed on the brakes, swerved, flipped u turns and broken half of what was already in the van to get to a yard sale only to find out that it was not till the next day. or EVEN WORSE…the people left the sign out from the stinkin’ week before!!! there ought to be a fine! THAT’s something the cobb county police ought to be patroling!!! it’s a sure fire safety hazard!!
#6 – AND – if you use the word FURNITURE in your yard sale ad…there should be a hard fast law that you have to offer more than an incorrectly assembled over the toilet shelf with a heart cut out and one door missing. if you say FURNITURE…you need to have several decent pieces sitting in your driveway!
#7 – and lastly…if there is a NEIGHBORHOOD garage sale going on…please…oh please…keep your garage door SHUT if you are not participating in the sale. do you KNOW how embarrassing it is to shop in someone’s garage who has no intention of selling anything? to have someone innocently come out to get the morning paper in their pajamas and find you sorting thru their personal belongings??? i have finally let go of the guilt – realizing that they were lame enough to open the garage when there was a NEIGHBORHOOD sale going on. KEEP IT SHUT unless you’re playing too!!!
whew! i feel a little better.
now….that being said….i did find a garage sale that did things right. after about 17 frustrating experiences, i headed towards a sale that advertised furniture. well i get there 5 minutes after it starts and THIS was in the driveway. i was SO excited. it was far enough away from civilization that there were no other cars, no frenzied women, and no early birds. and he knew what he had – a gorgeous antique in fabulous shape… but he also knew it was sitting in his driveway in a garage sale. so i was able to come home with this stunning solid wood curved front bee-you-ti-ful dresser. i love the hardware…crud – i love the whole thing!!!!
